I turned it over and over in my mind, reasoning it out. Then I read Proverbs 14:26, “In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.”
This simple verse made me realize that confidence is sometimes misunderstood. Some people mistake boldness and naiveness for confidence. It is possible to be bold or even naïve before you come to fully understand the situation. What makes confidence different from boldness?
The definition of confidence is: certain about the truth of something. Our confidence should be in God, and in His infallible Truth.
It is possible for our confidence to be misplaced and we must guard against that. Proverbs 25:19 says, “Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.”
Confidence in God and His Word, is never misplaced. Abraham may not have fully understood the situation he found himself in when he was on the verge of sacrificing his son, God’s precious promise to him. Yet, he never wavered. He remained confident that the Lord would bring His Word to pass. The same God that gave him a son had the power to restore life to him.
It is trust in God and His Word that makes us able to be confident when we do not fully understand the situation we find ourselves in. Having confidence in God isn’t naïve or foolish. It isn’t blindly following, it is just the simple faith and trust of a child. Be confident in Him.
