Shadows of Romance (Part 2)
I am an avid reader and enjoy looking for new books to add to my series. Occasionally, I'll find one with an interesting plot and cover which has a shadow of romance in it. And occasionally the shadow of romance tends to develop into more than I bargained for. I'll stop reading in mid-sentence and think to myself, "If I knew things were going to go this far or end like this, I probably wouldn't have bought this book!"
This reminds me a lot of real life situations. Friends and acquaintances have started friendships with guys telling themselves and everyone else that they are only friends. Now, I am not saying have guys for friends are bad. Have friendships with guys can be good if you keep it casual, keep it godly, and respect the boundary-lines.
The "just-friends" scenario won't work if you are texting him every day, talking to him on the phone for hours, planning fun things to do with him on your weekend or days off. I've listened to several distraught young women ask me the questions, "What did I do wrong? How could this have happened? I let is go too far! It was just a shadow of romance.
The problem with shadows is that it is difficult to know how deep it goes, and realize though the shadow may be abstract, the thing creating the shadow is concrete and very real.
If you want to be "just-friends" then don't do anything that will push it to the next level. I'm not judging anyone, I've made mistakes just like everyone else. Sometimes, you don't know you've crossed the boundary until you've crossed a couple more. If you find yourself in this situation, re-evaluate your friendship. It may be time to take a step back and limit your time and conversations with him. (This is strictly for young people that have intention of becoming a couple or courting).
And as always, don't forget to consult those that God has placed in authority over you. Don't just consult them. Listen to them!
Just because its a shadow doesn't mean you won't be drawn deeper in. Keep God first and follow His instructions, and remember that His love is true.
