Is truth the new hate speech? I have asked myself this question numerous times. To answer it, I first had to define what 'hate speech' was. Basically, hate speech is defined as any forbidden speech, conduct, display, writing, or gesture that would incite prejudicial action/violence against any individual/group, and is something that intimidates or belittles them.
I also wanted to define truth: Truth is defined as that which is true and in accordance to fact and reality, the quality and state of being true (honest, sincere).
Here is another question: Why are people offended by the truth?
I compare it to going to the doctor and being told that you are over-weight. Yes, what he said is true, it is an accordance with fact based on research and coincides with reality (this is not abstract), yet, the person is still offended.
But, who decides what truth is?
God does. God and His Word is the ultimate truth, In the Bible it says, "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6)
So here is a series of questions I composed to see if truth is "hate speech":
- Is truth forbidden?
- Does truth encourage prejudice against others?
- Does truth intimidate people?
- Does truth belittles people?
I did some study on it, and have composed my answers to these questions (other people might differ, but that is okay).
- Truth is not forbidden. (John 1:14 ) "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth." To say that truth is forbidden is to say God and His Word is forbidden, and can man forbid God?
- Truth encourages us unity: (Ephesians 4:25) "Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another." Truth unites us, lies divide us.
- Sometimes truth intimidates people because they fear getting exposed. It is no different than a criminal being intimated by a judge or police officer.
- Truth does not belittle people, rather it promises freedom! (John 8:32) "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." It also sanctifies us (makes us holy). (John 17:17) "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth."
Many people have misconceptions about truth. They think truth is dangerous, when truth promises safety. They think truth divides people, when in reality, truth will not coincide with lies (this is why there is a division). They think truth intimidates people, when really they are just trying to avoid the reality their sin will be judged.
There is no need to be ashamed of the truth or to accept other people's opinions regarding it. Base your faith on the Word of God and stand for the truth no matter how many will come against it. Truth is not hate. Because God is truth, and He is love. (1 John 4:8) "He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love." In the same way, a person who rejects the truth, rejects God; because God is truth.
Believe the truth, even when no one else will believe.
Stand for the Truth, even when no one else will stand.
Speak the truth, even when no one else will speak the Truth... even if your voice shakes.
